Are You Our 2019 Summer Intern?

By January 22, 2019November 27th, 2023No Comments

So begins the search for our 2019 Summer Intern. Upon beefing up their resumes with their McConkey experience, our interns graduated and earned impressive positions with our partners and even with our company!

If you are a junior, senior or recent graduate, here are 7 signs that you might be the perfect candidate for us!

1. You’re interested in joining a field with lots of growth opportunity.
Insurance is a well-established and (dare we say) old industry, but don’t let that scare you. Many insurance professionals are likely to retire within the next ten years; this means opportunity to learn about the business from true experts that will mentor you and prepare you for professional growth and development.

2. You want to distinguish yourself from your peers and the competition.
McConkey Insurance & Benefits, one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s largest and most respected insurance brokerage firms, has been providing unmatched service to an ever-changing market for nearly 130 years. Our company is a consistent “Best Places to Work in Insurance” and “Top Fastest Growing Companies” award recipient. In 2018, we were even a finalist for Central Penn Business Journal’s Business of the Year. For us to be so well-established and maintain our exceptional reputation, we only hire the best and brightest. This includes our interns.

3. You don’t want to just deliver mail and fetch coffee, because you are searching for a true learning opportunity.
Our interns focus on learning about the insurance industry and the businesses we service, not being our “go-for.” McConkey’s ideal candidate is self-motivated with a real get-it-done attitude. Our interns are tasked with and involved in projects that are relevant and meaningful while gaining true business experience in a hands-on atmosphere. Our internship program also offers opportunities to participate in client-facing meetings and attend events with business leaders. But, don’t just take our word for it:

Entering this new experience, I was unsure of the expectations and nervous for what was ahead. The first thing I noticed about McConkey is the positive environment in the office. Coming in and being an intern, you think you’re going to be treated in a different way which could hurt your experience. Right from the start I was treated like an employee who had been there for a while. I attended important meetings weekly where I was able to learn from colleagues and ask various questions pertaining to specific situations.

4. You want to make a positive impact on others.
The business of insurance is about being there when individuals and organizations need help the most. McConkey works hard to prepare our clients before the worst happens. We help large corporations, small businesses, non-profit organizations and families sleep better at night knowing what matters most is protected.

5. You want to broaden your horizons and gain exposure to many different types of industries.
As an intern at McConkey, the experience isn’t limited to just our company. Interns are also exposed to our many insurance carrier partners. Additionally, because the clientele we service comes from a breadth of industries, our interns have the chance to take a peak inside other types of companies and organizations, from contractors to restaurants to non profits, and everything in between.

6. You want experience with a company that has a great culture and that mirrors your values.
McConkey prides itself on our team-based culture which drives our success from within. Every day, we strive to practice and truly live by our core values: Excellence, Integrity, Teamwork, Relationships, Innovation and Experience. We practice social responsibility through our continuous charitable support and Community Outreach Committee.

7. You want access to mentorship and learning opportunities from executives and senior leadership.
What makes McConkey and our internship program unique is the approachability of not only our staff, but also the senior leadership and even owners of the company. Everyone from our CEO, President and Vice Presidents to our managers, supervisors, agents and administrative staff are eager to take part in teaching promising talent and exposing our intern to all facets of the insurance industry, never in a way that feels intimidating or demeaning.
