Explain Like I’m 5: Health Care Terms

By July 11, 2025December 4th, 2025No Comments

Let’s be honest, health insurance can feel like learning a foreign language. Between deductibles, copays, and a hundred acronyms, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But understanding your health benefits shouldn’t feel like a pop quiz.

We’ve broken down some of the most important health insurance terms in a way that’s simple, clear, and yes, kind of like we’re explaining it to a 5-year-old.

Premium

This is the money you pay every month just to have health insurance. Kind of like a subscription to Netflix, but for your health.

Deductible

This is the amount you have to pay for care before your insurance starts to help. Think of it like filling up a piggy bank. Once it’s full, your plan kicks in and starts covering things.

Copayment (Copay)

This is a small fee you pay each time you go to the doctor or get medicine. It’s like a ticket to get in the door.

Coinsurance

After you meet your deductible, you and your insurance share the costs. For example, you might pay 20%, and your insurance pays 80%. It’s like splitting the bill after dinner, except your insurance is covering most of it.

Out-of-Pocket Maximum

This is your safety net. It’s the most you’ll ever have to pay in a year. After that, your insurance pays 100% of covered care.

In Network vs. Out of Network

In network doctors and hospitals have special deals with your insurance. They cost less. Out of network providers don’t have those deals and usually cost more. Think of in network like shopping at your favorite discount store.

Preventive Care

These are the checkups, screenings, and vaccines that help you not get sick. The best part is they’re often covered for free.

HMO, PPO, EPO, POS

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)
You need to pick one doctor (a Primary Care Physician) who helps manage all your care and gives referrals to see specialists.

PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)
More flexible. You can see any doctor, even without a referral, but you’ll pay less if you stay in network.

EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization)
You must stay in network to get covered, except in emergencies.

POS (Point of Service)
A mix of HMO and PPO. You need referrals, but you can go out of network at a higher cost.

Marketplace and ACA

The Health Insurance Marketplace is like an online store where you can shop for plans. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), plans must cover basic things like ER visits, maternity care, and prescriptions.

Advance Premium Tax Credit

If your income is lower, the government may help pay your monthly premium. It’s like a coupon for your health insurance.

Claim

This is a request your doctor or you send to the insurance company asking if they can pay for this.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA)

These are special piggy banks for medical expenses. You put money in before taxes are taken out and use it for things like doctor visits, medicine, or even bandages.

Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP

Medicare
For people age 65 and up or with certain disabilities.

Medicaid
For people with low income.

CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program)
For kids and some pregnant women whose families don’t qualify for Medicaid but still need help.

Wellness Programs

Some plans offer cool perks like gym memberships, smoking cessation programs, or discounts if you take steps to stay healthy.

Other Buzzwords Made Simple

Brand Name Drugs
Original versions of medicine.

Generic Drugs
Cheaper versions that work just as well.

Dependent
A child or spouse you include in your plan.

Pre Existing Condition
A health issue you had before getting your current plan.

Exclusions
Things your plan doesn’t cover.

Why It All Matters

The more you understand these terms, the more confident you’ll feel making choices about your health care. You don’t need to be an expert. You just need a little clarity and maybe a cheat sheet like this one.

When in doubt, ask. Your HR team, benefits advisor, or insurance provider is there to help you make the most of your coverage.
