Innovation in Action: Turning Data into Real Solutions

Innovation is often associated with big breakthroughs or new technology, but in our work at McConkey, it often looks a little different. It’s about consistently asking better questions, looking for smarter ways to serve our clients, and being willing to challenge the “way things have always been done.” Innovation matters because our clients rely on us to navigate increasingly complex challenges, especially when it comes to managing costs while still delivering strong benefits for their employees. For me, innovation shows up in the pursuit of better solutions, even when the answers aren’t obvious at first.

One area where I’ve seen this mindset come to life is how we approach rising healthcare costs. Like many employers, our clients are feeling the pressure of increasing medical expenses, and traditional strategies don’t always provide the relief they need. Rather than accepting those increases as inevitable, our team asked a different question: how can we use the information we already have to identify better solutions?

That question led to the formation of our cost containment committee. By analyzing client-specific data, we work together to identify patterns, uncover high-cost drivers, and develop targeted strategies that address the roots of the issue. The goal isn’t simply to react to rising costs, it’s to proactively find opportunities to improve outcomes. These opportunities come from smarter use of data, creative thinking, and collaboration across our team.

What makes this approach truly innovative is the mindset behind it. Innovation doesn’t always mean building something entirely new; sometimes it means looking at existing information from a different perspective. By empowering our team to think beyond conventional approaches and share ideas openly, we’re able to uncover opportunities that might otherwise go unnoticed.

This experience reinforced something important for me: innovation is a team effort. When people from different backgrounds and specialties come together with a shared goal, the results are often stronger than anything one person could develop alone. It also reminds me that innovation doesn’t have to be complicated. Often, the most effective solutions come from asking the right questions and being willing to explore possibilities others may overlook.

At McConkey, innovation is part of how we show up for our clients every day. It’s about staying curious, using data thoughtfully, and empowering our team to pursue better solutions. The next time you encounter a challenge, it’s worth asking a simple question: Is there a smarter way to approach this? Sometimes that question is where innovation begins.
