From the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA), it is Trench Safety Stand-Down Week. The purpose of this week is to bring awareness around the hazards of trench and excavation work and to promote the safety of workers. This line of work is particularly dangerous, as just this past December, five construction workers perished in separate trench collapses. This brings the total number of fatalities for 2020 from trench collapses to at least 21. According to reports from OSHA, 2020 saw a similar number of fatalities as compared to 2019, making it the second deadliest year since 2010.
At the end of every day, we want your workers to return home safely to their families, which is why implementing the appropriate trenching safety measures can ensure their safety. NUCA is encouraging utility construction, residential, highway construction, plumbers, military, unions, associations, educational institutes and safety equipment manufacturers to participate. Employers can utilize the resources from NUCA which include:
- Daily Excavation Checklist
- Trench Safety Handouts
- Excavation Trench Safety Presentation
- Toolbox Talk Literature
- OSHA Resources
NUCA has additional resources and tips for holding safety stand-downs. For more information, visit the National Utility Contractors Association website. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Steve McCarty or a member of your McConkey service team.
