What to Do If You Hit a Deer

By June 26, 2025December 4th, 2025No Comments

Accidents involving deer and other animals are more common than you might think. Pennsylvania ranks as one of the top states involving animal-related crashes. Whether you’re driving through wooded backroads or suburban neighborhoods, it’s important to know what to do if you hit a deer.

At McConkey, we’re here to guide you through the unexpected. If you ever find yourself in this situation, here is a checklist of what to do:

1. Stay Calm and Pull Over Safely

First and foremost, stay calm. Hitting a deer can be jarring, but your safety comes first. Pull your vehicle over to the shoulder or a safe area off the road, turn on your hazard lights, and take a deep breath.

2. Check for Injuries

Check yourself and any passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911 right away. Even if you feel okay, adrenaline may mask injuries, so be cautious and consider getting checked out.

3. Do Not Approach the Deer

A wounded deer may still be alive and could react unpredictably. For your safety, keep your distance and do not try to move the animal yourself.

4. Call the Police

In many states, including Pennsylvania, you are required to report an accident involving large animals like deer. Police can file an official report, which may be necessary for your insurance claim. They can also help safely handle the animal if it’s obstructing traffic.

5. Document the Scene

Take photos of the scene, including:

  • Damage to your vehicle

  • The surrounding area

  • The animal (from a distance)

  • Any relevant road signs or skid marks

This documentation can be useful if you need to open an insurance claim.

6. Contact Your Insurance Provider

After ensuring everyone’s safety and filing a police report, notify your insurance provider as soon as possible. At McConkey, we’re here to walk you through the claims process with ease and support.

Does insurance cover hitting a deer?
Yes, if you elect comprehensive coverage, damage from animal related accidents is typically covered, less your comprehensive deductible. This is different from collision coverage, which applies to accidents with other vehicles or hitting an object such as a tree, guardrail, hit and run, etc.

7. Don’t Drive an Unsafe Vehicle

If your vehicle is too damaged to drive, call for roadside assistance or towing. This is another coverage available to add to your policy for these types of situations. Driving a car with serious damage could be dangerous or cause further issues.
