It Takes a Team: How Collaboration Drives Culture

An organization with the legacy and history of McConkey does not thrive for 135 years without collaboration at its core. The strongest outcomes rooted in trust, ethics, and leadership happen when people work together toward shared goals. Clear roles and structure absolutely matter. But collaboration is what creates buy-in, builds psychological safety, and gives people a true sense of ownership. When employees feel they have a voice in shaping the organization, they become more invested in its success. That is what culture is all about!

In Human Resources, we like to think of ourselves as cultural architects. Our role goes far beyond policy and procedure. We are constantly thinking about how decisions, new programs, and even current events will impact the people of the organization and the overall employee experience. Because of this, we regularly collaborate with managers, employees, and senior leadership to determine what is best for the organization.

Collaboration becomes especially important when we are building onboarding programs for new employees. We partner closely with hiring managers, our tech team, and leadership to ensure the experience is not only effective and engaging, but truly reflective of McConkey’s culture and core values.

We also make it a priority to check in with new hires along the way. Their feedback helps us understand what is working, what feels overwhelming, and where we can improve. By working across teams and listening to real employee experiences, we are able to create programs that feel practical, supportive, and genuinely people centered.

Ultimately, collaboration within HR creates real shared ownership of the employee experience. When we intentionally involve the right people and truly listen to different perspectives, we build a culture that people do not just work in but genuinely believe in and want to support.

That collaborative mindset helps McConkey to continue to evolve in a way that respects its longhistory while preparing thoughtfully for what comes next. Collaboration does more than make our work easier. It makes us stronger together.

Something to reflect on: What role do you play in shaping the culture around you?
