Relationships: The Heart of Everything We Do at McConkey

There’s a question we get asked fairly often — what makes McConkey different? We could talk about our expertise, our resources, or the breadth of solutions we bring to the table. And all ofthat matters. But the truest answer is simpler than that. It’s relationships. Not as a buzzword or a tagline, but as a genuine commitment to consistency, responsiveness, and care for the people and communities we serve. This isn’t a new direction for McConkey. It’s a reflection of who we’ve always been. For our team, relationships aren’t just part of the job — they’re the reason the work matters.

Built Over Generations

The clearest proof of that isn’t something you can find in a brochure. It’s something you can see in our client list.

Our longest-tenured client has been with McConkey since the 1930s. That relationship has outlasted recessions, world events, industry disruptions, and seismic shifts in the way business gets done. It has spanned multiple generations — both in their family business and within ours. What keeps a relationship like that alive across nearly a century? It isn’t any single policy or competitive price. It’s trust, built slowly and consistently over decades of showing up, following through, and genuinely caring about the success of the people on the other side of the table.

That trust has a way of multiplying. One client came to us through a referral and has since referred others to McConkey themselves. But the part that stays with me has nothing to do with new business. I’ve stayed at their home with my family during a road trip. We know each other’s families. We’ve had dinners together and discussed some of life’s challenges. That’s not a typical client relationship — and that’s exactly the point.

That kind of longevity doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because relationships at McConkey don’t live in one place. Our entire team builds deep, personal connections with the clients they work with every day. They know people by name. They take the time to truly understand a client’s business — the nuances, the pressures, the goals. They anticipate needs before they’re asked. When a client calls McConkey, they aren’t starting from scratch with a stranger — they’re reaching someone who knows their history and genuinely cares about the outcome. That’s a fundamentally different experience than what you get from a large, transactional broker, and our clients feel that difference at every level of the relationship.

The Referral as the Ultimate Proof Point

That culture of genuine connection has a natural result: the majority of McConkey’s new business comes from client referrals. To us, that is the greatest compliment we can receive.

A referral means a client trusted us enough — valued their relationship with our team enough — to put their own name behind ours. They picked up the phone and told someone they care about, these are the people you want in your corner. That doesn’t happen because of a product or a price. It happens because of people, and the relationships they invest in every single day.

Relationships matter because they create trust, and trust is what everything else is built on. Without it, even the best solutions can fall flat. With it, challenges become easier to navigate, successes become more meaningful, and the solutions we deliver are built on a foundation of real understanding — not assumptions.

The Takeaway

So what does the core value of relationships mean in practice at McConkey? It means every client is treated like a long-term partner. It means our entire team is invested in your success — not just at renewal time, but every day in between. It means investing in relationships personal enough that they span decades and generations — growing into something far more than business.

If there’s one thing we’d leave you with, it’s this: in every interaction — with a client, a colleague, or a partner — there’s an opportunity to strengthen the relationship, not just move the work forward. At McConkey, that’s an opportunity we never take for granted.
